Welcome to You Ask Andy

Duane Johnson, age 12, of Tulsa, Okla., for his question:

Where do the hummingbirds go during the winter?

Every spring our land is visited by 19 different kinds of hummingbirds. Taut only one, the ruby throated hummingbird, goes west of the Mississippi. These tiny birds, colored like glistening jewels, come to build their nests and raise their families. When summer is over they fly far south to warmer climates where nectar rich flowers and tiny bugs are plentiful.

Some fly to Mexico or even farther south to Central America. Some of the whirring winged midgets fly 500 miles non stop across the Gulf of Mexico. Only one kind winters in North America. This little beauty is the Anna hummingbird. One of his brothers spends the winter in a Southern California garden.
