Welcome to You Ask Andy

Sue Aubin, age 11, of Lakeland, Minnesota, for her question:

When will the energy crisis be over?

This great day will come when we no longer use coal, oil or natural gas as sources of fuel. The earth created only so much and no more of these so called fossil fuels. We are using them up at a great rate. Someday the supplies will run out and there is no way to make any more of them. So the energy crisis is not going to get any better—as long as we depend upon the dwindling supplies of fossil fuels.

Some people say we should turn to nuclear power, but this has some drawbacks. Others say that we should find ways to use the mighty energy of the sun. This seems to be the most sensible answer, though at present we are not sure how to use it. But when we do learn a simple way to use solar energy, the energy crisis will be over forever. For the shining sun provides more energy than we could possibly use—and new supplies will arrive every day for billions of years to come.
