Welcome to You Ask Andy

Mary Alice Keefe$ age l3# of Rochester, N. Y,, for her question:

How do flies crawl on the ceiling?

Have you ever stepped in a piece of sticky goo and had trouble pulling your foot loose? Could you imagine a piece of gum so strong and sticky that it could hold you hanging from the ceiling? If so, you can imagine how the pesky fly manages to walk along in an upside down position,.

The fly does his walking on tiptoe. He balances on two minute claws which grow from the bottom of each of his six legs. Under these claws is a pad of sticky goo dust big enough and sticky enough to hold Mrs. Fly hanging from the ceiling. He walks, or crawls along in this uncomfortable looking position by pulling down each foot and carefully placing it up again.
