Welcome to You Ask Andy

Gregory Burr, age 9, of Indianapolis, Ind.,for his question:

Can owls see in the dark?

Mr. Owl usually dozes through the day, but if you wake him up, he may open a pair of eyes like shiny saucers and give you a solemn stare. He may open one eye and give you a knowing wink. Those big round eyes are at their very best after sunset and the experts now believe that Mr, Owl can really see in the dark.

For a long time, most experts thought that the owl needed just a speck of light to see a shadowy mouse scuttling along the shadowy ground. But this may not be so at all. When more experiments have been done, we may be able to report that the owl can really see in the darkness with no light at all   but how he does it, nobody knows.
