Welcome to You Ask Andy

Linda Ann Johnson, age 10, of Richmond, Va... for her question:

Can an ostrich fly?

The ostrich is the biggest and the heaviest bird in the world and his small wings are almost useless. He could not fly, even if he wanted to do so. Hut this does not bother him at all. He is quite happy to stay on the ground of his native Africa, even when there are hungry lions around.

The big bird stands maybe eight feet tall and his sharp eyes can spot trouble coming from afar. He can outrun his enemies with giant strides and, when cornered, can use his mighty legs to kick like a mule.
