Welcome to You Ask Andy

Joan Francisco, age 9, of Ely, Nev. For her question:

What do the penguins eat at the South Pole?

The penguins of Antarctica, live around the edges of the frozen land mass. There the icy cliffs of the south polar glaciers dip down to the chilly waters of the ocean. There is no food at all for the penguins on the frozen ice. But there is plenty of food for them in the chilly water.

Many kinds of fish enjoy life in these cold cold waters, and the penguins are great fishermen, They dive into the chilly seas and use their wing flippers to swim under water. Down there they devour sardines, When they finally come ashore again, the birds are often so full of sardines that they can hardly walk.
