Welcome to You Ask Andy

Mary Noonan, age 11, of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, for her question:

What is the seed of a giraffe?

This tall, long legged fellow is a very graceful strider. He can trot or canter like a horse, or walk like any other agile four footed animal. He also can gallop like other speedy animals. Often he paces like a camel. Then he advances one side at a time " first the two right feet, then the two left feet. This pacing is a graceful gait and the giraffe seems to glide along like a ship on the waves. When a giraffe is in a hurry, he runs much too fast for a human runner to keep up with him. He has been clocked at 32 miles an hour and when pressed for time, no doubt he can speed even faster.

The giraffe lives on grassy plains strewn with spreading acacia trees. But even when speeding, he never tangles his long neck in the branches. The agile fellow twists and turns, dips his head and bends his body from side to side as he goes. When startle, he takes off with his family at top speed. They pace along, one behind another, and cresting a hill against the skyline the galloping giraffes are a handsome sight.
